Competitions are available to attend each season for StarSkate ranging from Star 1 to Gold across the Island. You'll receive competition dates, registration details, and links via email as they become available. Check out the events calendar on the Skating BC website for events and news. Registration usually opens 8 weeks prior to competition, with schedules posted 3 weeks in advance.
Parents are responsible for registering their skater in the appropriate categories through the Skating BC website. Keep in mind that most competitions run three days (Friday to Sunday) and registration fees can range from $75 to $100. You can expect an invoice from the attending coach for their services after the competition.
Star 1
Skaters are this level are showcasing their elements. Elements are individually executed with a group of skaters, typically using half the ice surface. Skaters are assessed to a standard by a panel of officials. For each elements, skaters are awarded a BRONZE, SILVER, GOLD rating. At the conclusion of the event, skaters will receive a report card and a ribbon. Coaches are allowed to be on the ice with skaters at this level.
Star 2 & 3
Skaters at this level often perform their 2-minute free skate solo which includes the required elements. Skaters will perform their program individually using the full ice and assesses by a panel of officials. For each elements, officials award a BRONZE, SILVER or GOLD rating. STAR 2 & 3 will also include three program components: SKATING SKILLS, PERFORMANCE & INTERPRETATION. At the conclusion of the event, skaters will receive a report card and a ribbon. Coaches will stay alongside the boards off the ice for a skaters warm up and program. Skaters may also choose to compete in individual or team elements or interpretive skating events.
Star 4 - 9
Skaters at this level often perform their 2-minute free skate solo which includes the required elements. STAR 4 is the first level where skaters are ranked amongst each other and medals are given to the top 3 skaters.
COACHES
Coaches will be by each skater's side throughout their competition timeslot, ensuring they are properly warmed up and ready to perform. They will be present alongside the boards, providing support and encouragement during each solo. This dedicated guidance helps skaters feel confident and prepared as they take the ice.
